NFA to import extra 500,000 tonnes rice to boost stocksMANILA (Reuters) – The National Food Authority (NFA) said on Tuesday it will import up to 500,000 tonnes of rice from countries including Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia, possibly before end of the year, after its stocks dwindled amid typhoon relief efforts.

“The NFA Council approved the additional rice importation in an emergency meeting last Friday. Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia are qualified to make an offer,” Dennis Arpia, NFA senior executive assistant, told Reuters.
NFA Spokesman Rex Estoperez, in a separate phone interview, said the state grains agency needs to boost its buffer stock while its relief efforts in areas hit by supertyphoon Haiyan early this month continue.

Vietnamese pangasius exports to India up 45 percent

(vasep.com.vn) Vietnam saw a strong increase in pangasius export to India in 2012, the trend continued in the first months of 2013. According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, through the middle of March, India imported US$2.7 million of pangasius products, a 45-percent rise over the same period last year.

Japan consuming more pangasius from Vietnam

(Vasep.com.vn) Currently, export to Japan still represented a little part of Vietnam’s total pangasius shipments. The increasing import of pangasius into Japan over the recent years shows that the market is eyeing this kind of fish.

Bangladesh Extends Ban on Non-Fragrant Rice Exports Until 2016

The Bangladesh government has extended the five-year-old ban on exports of non-fragrant rice for another three years, amid estimates of lower rice production and a spike in domestic rice prices in last month.
